Different types of whey protein
There are 3 types of whey proteins that differ in their production process. These are whey protein concentrate, whey protein hydrolysate and whey protein isolate. The latter is the highest quality with a protein content of 90-96 %.
2. Production process
Whey protein isolate can be produced using different methods. One method used is the ion exchange process. This uses chemicals to alter the protein´s electrical charge. It binds to special resins, which produces a particularly pure protein. The disadvantage of this is that is destroys natural components of the protein.
There are also special filtration processes (micro-filtration and ultra-filtration), in which the whey protein isolate is produced using ceramic filters rather than chemical substances.
This retains many bioactive protein fractions, which would be destroyed by the ion exchange process. These include, for example, alpha lactalbumin, beta lactalbumin and glycomacropeptide, which support the immune system and improve absorption of many minerals.
3. Special features of whey protein isolate
Whey protein isolate is the highest quality whey protein on the market. With a protein content of 90-96 % and an extremely low fat and carbohydrate content, it is one of the most popular protein supplements amongst athletes. Whey protein isolate is also as good as lactose-free, which means it is also ideal for people with lactose intolerance.
Thanks to its rapid availability, whey protein isolate is ideal for taking just after training. Whey protein isolate is the best source of protein after training for weightlifters and bodybuilders, but amateur enthusiasts and those taking part in recreational sports may also benefit from the optimum composition and fast availability.
